Chemotherapy-Induced Neuropathy: Treatment Options

Chemotherapy-Induced Neuropathy: Causes, Symptoms And Treatment Options

What is Chemotherapy Induced Neuropathy?

Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy (CIPN) is a common and weakening side effect of certain chemotherapy drugs. This condition occurs when the peripheral nerves are damaged due to the toxic effects of chemotherapy.

Chemotherapy drugs, which are used to treat cancers, are also toxic to healthy nerve cells and can end up damaging them. This might affect sensory, motor, and autonomic nerves causing pain, discomfort, and functional limitations that impact one’s daily life.

Symptoms of Chemotherapy-Induced Neuropathy

Many patients have complained of tingling or numbness in the hands and feet, which have even progressed up the limbs. Some feel burning or shooting pain that is often worsened by touch or temperature changes.

There can be muscle weakness or coordination issues as well. These symptoms often end after the therapy but can persist even after chemotherapy has ended in some cases.
