Even while they can save lives, chemotherapy drugs can be quite aggressive. They attack cells that divide quickly, including cancer cells, but they may also affect healthy nerve cells in a number of ways, such as:
- Drugs have the ability to directly harm the architecture of nerve cells.
- Mitochondrial Dysfunction: Interfering with the creation of cellular energy.
- The production of toxic free radicals that destroy nerve tissues is known as oxidative stress.
- Inflammatory Reactions: Initiating long-term inflammatory reactions.
A variety of symptoms may be reported by patients with CIPN, such as feelings of tingling, hands, and feet that are numb, a sharp, flaming ache, diminished feeling, weakness in muscles, balance issues, and sensitivity to variations in temperature.
